The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, August 2, arrested a level six officer of the Accounts Department of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Christy Olabode, for an alleged fraud to the tune of N100 million.

Also arrested was her younger brother, Abdul-Shehu Obaze, a staff at the Commercial Department of FAAN in Ilorin, Kwara State, and Dominic Ojo, an IT officer at FAAN Headquarters, Lagos.
Her arrest followed an anonymous petition, which indicated that she allegedly diverted the said sum, by inserting names of non-FAAN staff into its payroll.

She allegedly conspired with Obaze, to perpetrate the fraud. Obaze was found to have maintained not less than eight accounts in seven new generation banks, which were used to receive the funds for onward distribution to “several high ranking officers within the FAAN”. The funds were being paid into his various bank accounts with the narrative, “Furniture Allowance”.

However, while allowance for FAAN's furniture is usually paid once in three years, Obaze received the “allowance” several times within a year. Investigations carried out by the EFCC revealed that the fraud had gone on since 2013. It unearthed a payroll with names of many dead, retired and disengaged staff of FAAN listed against Obaze's different bank accounts.

Upon interrogation, Obaze, a level nine officer, confessed that other FAAN officials were involved in the massive fraud, including Olabode's husband who works in the Human Resources department of FAAN. Olabode and Ojo currently enjoy administrative bail, while Obaze remains in EFCC custody. They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Shehraz Sarwar, 38, has been jailed after causing panic and tears among travelers by shouting 'Allahu Akbar'

Man jailed for 6 weeks after shouting 'Allahu Akbar' and 'boom' on Birmingham-bound flight

Shehraz Sarwar, 38, has been jailed after causing panic and tears among travelers by shouting 'Allahu Akbar' and 'boom' on a Birmingham-bound Emirates Boeing 777 flight from Dubai. He's been jailed for 10 weeks after a Birmingham crown court heard that some of the 347 passengers burst into tears after becoming frightened by Sarwar's shouting during a turbulence-hit landing on February 1, 2016.

Prosecuting counsel told the court that Sarwar had caused difficulties from the start of the flight, twice refusing to put his seat belt on during take-off and throwing food around the cabin.

He said:
"There was terrible turbulence during the flight and some passengers were very frightened. The defendant started chanting Allahu Akbar over and over again and very loudly. People were getting very distressed with his behaviour. When the plane finally landed, he shouted 'boom'. It left some passengers in tears while one man angrily confronted the defendant before being told to sit down by cabin staff. Police were then called and the defendant was arrested."
Mr Balbir Singh, defending lawyer argued that Sarwar had been upset after attending his grandmother's funeral in Pakistan.

He said:
"There was considerable turbulence. One of the cabin crew, with 14 years' experience, said it was the worst landing she had ever experienced. Mr Sarwar was scared during the flight. He prayed, chanting 'Allahu Akbar', which translates as 'God is Great'. When the plane landed he did shout out 'boom'.
"It was a very foolish thing to do and he can't really explain why he said it - it was the height of foolishness. He is very sorry for his actions and realises what distress this caused to other passengers."

Borno Gov. has directed security agencies to investigate diversion of large quantities of rice

Borno Governor orders probe of alleged diversion of rice meant for feeding IDPs, blames opponents

Borno Government has directed security agencies to investigate alleged diversion of large quantities of rice meant for feeding Internally Displaced Persons in the state.
The rice, supplied by the National Emergency Management Agency for the feeding of the IDPs in the state, was allegedly diverted by some government officials.

The directive is contained in a statement issued on Saturday by Malam Isa Gasau, the Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy to Governor Kashim Shettima, in Maiduguri.
Gusau said that the governor gave the directive, while hosting heads of security agencies and members of the State Executive Council to a Ramadan breakfast at the Government House in Maiduguri.
He said that the directive followed widespread allegations that some government functionaries were diverting food supplies meant for the feeding of the IDPs to personal use.
"Governor Kashim Shettima has directed security agents to investigate and arrest anyone found culpable in the alleged diversion of rice meant for the feeding of the IDPs in the state.
"The directive followed the circulation of video clips and still pictures on social media alleging that some officials of the State Emergency Management Agency are re-bagging rice meant for the IDPs’ feeding for onward sales in the market," he said.
The special adviser said that Shettima, however, blamed the development on certain politicians who were bent on bringing down his administration at all costs.

Presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump told NBC’s

Donald Trump: Forget about the polls and the GOP infighting, I’ll win in November ‘one way or the other’

Presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he will win the U.S Presidential election in November 'one way or the other'.

The Billionaire businessman said everyone should forget the polls, forget the short list of important endorsements and forget the GOP infighting, that he'll win the elections.
“We're going to go onto a great victory. It would be nice if the Republicans stuck together,”

“I'm a different kind of a candidate, I think that I win either way. I can win one way or the other,” he said.
When asked specifically of the reports regarding a mutiny of the Republican delegates, Trump dismissed the chatter at once.
“Number one, they can't do it legally. Number two, I worked for one year and we won all of those delegates. And, you know, I guess I'm at almost 1,600,” he said, referring to the 1,542 delegates he’s secured. To win the nomination on the first ballot at the Republican National Convention next month and avoid a contested convention, Trump needs only 1,237 delegates.
Prominent Republican, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), said Sunday that he would stand by Trump, even if it was out of obligation in order not to create party divisions.
“I feel like I have certain responsibilities, as not just Congressman Paul Ryan from the first district of Wisconsin, but as Speaker of the House. And imagine the Speaker of the House not supporting the duly elected nominee of our party, therefore creating a chasm in our party to split us in half, which basically helps deny us the White House, and strong majorities in Congress,” Ryan said on the same NBC program.
“Now … if something is done and said that I don't agree with that I think puts a bad label on conservatism, then I'm going to speak out on it as I have, as I will continue to do, and I hope I don't have to keep doing,” added Ryan.
